  • Always have a map of the area that you will be traveling to.  Get both a map of the specific city that you will be in, as well as a more general map of the surrounding counties, states, countries, or so forth.
  • Pack as little as possible in your suitcase, and remember to keep important information such as visas, prescriptions, and contact information, maps, and so on with you at all times, not checked in your luggage.
  • Try to only use one credit card for your entire trip – it makes it easier to keep track of expenses.  Also, make sure that you carry any cash that you have (and that should not be a very large amount) on your body, in, for instance, a money belt.
  • For safety, always carry a small travel flashlight, even one that hooks onto your key chain.  Also, if you rent a car, remove stickers that might indicate that it is a rented vehicle.
