  • Use a wide array of sources when searching for a rental.  Check out specific companies’ sites online, as well as more general sites such as Orbitz or Expedia.  Also, make phone calls to the rental car companies 800 numbers, and after you book, continue checking back to see if there is a better last minute deal.
  • Make sure that you have an accurate account of what taxes will be paid on the car, and verify that the total price you are given includes all applicable taxes.
  • Many car companies have additional fees that they may tack on if the car is brought in late, if it is without the correct amount of gas in the tank, if there are additional or young drivers, if you do not drop off and pick up at the same location, if you exceed the contracted mileage, if the vehicle you return is a mess, or if you rent extra equipment such as ski racks or child car seats.  Verify with the sales agent the cost of such additional charges, and be prepared should any of these scenarios occur.
  • When you pick up the car, complete a thorough walk around the vehicle to check for any existing damage, and make sure that the agent knows about the damage before you drive the car off of the lot.  Also, before you drop the car off, take pictures to prove that you gave the vehicle back in good condition.
  • Before you turn down the insurance offered by the rental car company, know your own existing policy well enough to verify that you would have full coverage were anything to happen.  If something is not covered in your policy for your own car, there is a good chance that it will not be covered for a rental car, so call your insurance company first.
